The city of Bordeaux on the Bay of Biscay is rightly famous for its wines, but also for the popularity of rugby amongst les Gascons. It is also noteworthy as the birthplace of King Richard II of England.

The stadium has hosted previous world cup matches (in 1999) and also the Heineken Cup Final (in 1998).
